Top 5 Picnic Spots in Summerville
#1 Azalea Park - Top of our list is Azalea Park. Located in the heart of Summerville with 16 acres, you have plenty of room to spread the blanket, find a seat at a picnic table and benches are tucked throughout the park. Main Street runs through the middle of Azalea, be sure to explore both sides for outdoor sculpture. Bring the kids for the turtle and butterfly ponds, ornamental bridges and there is always something blooming, especially in the spring with our famous azaleas
#2 Birthplace of Sweet Tea Mural - Located on the back of the Visitor Center, this spot is complete with large trees, picnic tables and the perfect backdrop for a photo (tag us @visitSummerville). The mural was painted by local artist/art teacher Kevin Morrissey as an ode to the sweet history of Summerville where the first commercially grown tea was grown in America by the Pinehurst Tea Farm. Stop in the Visitor Center for a Trail Guide to discover the Sweet Tea Trail and ways to win prizes.
#3 Hutchinson Square- In the heart of the historic downtown, the square was recently remodeled. The kids will love all the open green space to run, and you will enjoy the fountain shaded under historic oaks. Surrounded by plenty of shopping, dining and sweet treats, be sure to also visit Mason the World’s Largest Iced (Sweet) Tea and get that free stamp in your trail guide.
Bonus: Short Central has outdoor tables with umbrellas. When cobblestone was discovered under the street it was turned into a pedestrian walkway.
#4 Jessens Boat Landing - This beautiful spot on the Historic Ashley River, is a great place to enjoy nature with your picnic. Nearby are several dining options for easy pick up. The boardwalk has a fishing spot with a boat landing and a Kayak launch. With plenty of covered picnic tables, you will enjoy watching the wildlife and boats pass.
#5 Colonial Dorchester State Park - Just a mile up the Ashley River is a hidden picnic haven. This historic state park has a minimal admission of $3 per person allowing you to step back into history with picnic tables, bathrooms and the remains of the original settlement – think Dorchester, England to Dorchester, Massachusetts to Dorchester, South Carolina. The remaining Bell Tower is the perfect photo opportunity and the historic markers bring the history to life.
