Living the Sweet LIfe

one dessert at a time-

The tea isn’t the only thing sweet in Summerville.
Trust us when we say that while we may be small,

we have restaurants at the big-city level and our desserts are decadent.

We’re Southern hospitality with a side of pie (or cookie/muffin/cake)

because a good host never lets a guest go hungry.

(What can we say? It’s that Southern hospitality.)

Scroll on for our sweet round-up of a few of our local favorites.

Know Before You Go...
Because we're a small town with hard-working locally owned businesses, a lot of our spots need a day off. Be sure to check out restaurant opening days and times before you make plans to visit Sweet Summerville.

Start and end with dessert at Oscars

We have an insiders tip! Oscars has so many different areas to dine, that you can start with dessert in the bar, eat dinner in the restaurant and then choose between the bar or Azalea Room for more dessert. We won’t judge.

Baby Bundt Cake

Double chocolate bundt cake served warm with Crème Anglaise and coffee ice cream.

Caramel Xango

Cheesecake and caramel wrapped in a flour tortilla, deep fried with white chocolate Crème Anglaise served with cinnamon ice cream, candied pecans and caramel

New York Style Cheesecake served with a three-fruit coulis.

Pecan Tuille

A butter pecan shell filled with vanilla ice cream, seasonal fruit, topped with fruit coulis & whipped cream

Coffee with our dessert at Coastal Coffee Roasters

If you give a moose a muffin will they want three? Absolutely. Grab some locally roasted coffee and it’s up to you if you share.

You will FALL in love with the pumpkin muffins offered this November: Pumpkin donut, pumpkin chocolate and pumpkin cream cheese. They are made in house with locally sourced ingredients from Wishbone Heritage Farm and Lowcountry Creamery. Summerville’s friendliest gathering spot means there is a good chance you will be back tomorrow.

Sweet Tea Pecan Pie from Bakers BBQ

In a place where tea is measured by the gallon, we salute the Baker Family for putting tea into their made from scratch, award-winning Sweet Tea Pecan Pie. Technically, it is less sweet than most pecan pies because they substitute sweet tea for the heavy syrups and sugars. This gives you a lighter, more delicate flavor.

This family owned BBQ joint with plant nursery combined is the perfect “off the beaten path” experience. Open Thur-Sat, be sure to check their hours and call ahead to save a slice of this amazing pie.

SWEET Southern Hospitality served at Eva's on Main

Eva’s large selection could cause you some “problems”. They offer so much variety that you will have to make a return trips. (Not really a problem in our book!)  They’ve been serving up this sweet goodness in Summerville for the past 48 years – right on Main Street in historic downtown. You could eat pie for breakfast, walk around the square and eat cake for lunch. We wouldn’t blame you one bit! Check their Facebook Page for the daily offerings.

Swank Bakery, a Speciality Dessert Shop in the Heart of Downtown Summerville.

You know those pretty little french sandwich cookies? They are NOT pronounced “mac-ar-OOns”! Stop by Swank Deserts- they have dedicated a shirt to the cause! Be sure to order plenty of Mack-A-Rhons, they come in so many unique and thoughtfully created flavors.

Say it with us, Mack…A…Rhon!! Nervous? You can just point.
The bakery case is filled with them every morning with fresh, completely-from-scratch, highest-quality ingredients.

Or order the brownies– they are amazing, also.

Sweetwater One Twenty Three is a pure Sweetwater Delight

Sweetwater Delight is a house dessert and a customer favorite since the original Sweetwater Cafe of 20 years!

Thats because it is that good.

You know this one.. the pecan crusted bottom with creamy cream cheese layer with whip cream, next is the chocolate pudding layer, finished with a final layer of sugared pecans and whipped cream! Maybe you’ve had it, but it was called Better than Robert Redford or Fat Man’s Delight, even Chocolate Lasagna. We call it yummy goodness!

Dessert with History at The Icehouse

The Icehouse is known for its long history starting out as a power plant and then in 1920, providing ice to Summerville for 40 years. But since 1981, it has been serving up fresh, quality comfort food in one of Summerville's must-visit restaurants. As fabulous as their meals are, the desserts will have you at first bite.

Beignets, a fried delicious pastry dough with a crunchy outside and fluffy inside, covered in powdered sugar & caramel drizzle.

Homemade Buttermilk Creme Brulee topped with fresh fruit

Homemade Caramel Apple Streusel Cheesecake with caramel & fresh apple slices

Homemade Warm Chocolate Chunk Brownie with Peanut Butter Semifreddo

Homemade Warm Bourbon Pecan Pie topped with caramel drizzle and vanilla bean ice cream

*Feature Dessert* Warm Pumpkin French Toast topped with Pumpkin Latte Ice Cream, Caramel & Candied Pecans

Sweet tea is more than just a refreshing beverage - it's a symbol of Southern hospitality and tradition. For many years, this iconic drink has been a staple of Southern cuisine, and nowhere is its history more celebrated than in Summerville, South Carolina, the Birthplace of Sweet Tea. The History of Tea Tea has a rich history in America, with its roots dating back to the late 1700s when French explorer and botanist Andre Michaux first planted tea at Middleton Place Plantation, which is in modern-day Summerville. Beginning in 1880, despite two failed attempts to grow tea in South Carolina, the federal government became interested in this new tea experiment. It established an experimental tea farm at the former Newington Plantation, leasing 200 acres from Henry Middleton. In 1888, Dr. Charles Shepard, a philanthropist and professor at the Medical College of SC acquired 600 acres of the Newington Plantation property. He established the Pinehurst Tea Plantation using plants from the government’s farm. He cultivated about 100 acres, built a factory, and began to sell his tea commercially, becoming the first successful commercial tea farm operation in the United States. After Dr. Shepard's passing in 1915, his plantation became deserted and remained so for over four decades until the Lipton Company purchased it in 1960. They salvaged the remaining plants from Pinehurst and utilized them to open a research facility spanning 127 acres on Wadmalaw Island. In 1987, an expert third-generation tea taster trained in London named William B. Hall, purchased the tea farm to establish what is now the Charleston Tea Garden. In 2003, Bigelow Tea Co. purchased the farm and partnered with Hall. The tea from the Charleston Tea Garden, all derivatives of Dr. Shepard's Camellia sinensis, is still growing there today and has earned the honor of the Official White House Tea and the Official Hospitality Beverage of South Carolina. You can also see specimens of the tea plants from the Pinehurst Tea Gardens in the garden of the Summerville Museum .
