- In 1785, Summerville started as Pineland Village, when plantation owners came here to escape the swamp fevers and insects.
- In1888, Summerville became known as one of the two best places “on the face of the earth” for the treatment and recovery of lung and throat disorders. Such belief was founded in the purported healing aspects of the pine trees’ turpentine scent.
- In 1847, Summerville was incorporated as a town and passed a law prohibiting the cutting of certain size trees, one of the first such laws passed in the nation.
